Great Guide to the world's greatest architectural designs!
This book is indeed a masterpiece and it is great for someone who is studying to be an engineer or is interested in architecture. It is fantastic and has everything from the Lovely Louvre to the palace at Petra, from the Great Golden Gate to the construction of the Chrysler. It shows fine examples of art deco, modern, classical, Greek, Muslim etc. architectural wonders. It not only explains and shows the construction of these great buildings, but for certain buildings it also shows their plan, it's legends, along with information about who built it, why did they build it, whom did it build it for, when was it built, and where it is. It also has sections showing the greatest styles of architecture ever used along with a series of historic sites in the world. All in all this is a fantastic and very useful guide to the masterpieces of Architecture and Engineering.

Yours Are the Hands of Christ: The Practice of Faith
Published in Paperback by Upper Room (January, 1999)
Authors: James C. Howell and Janice Grana
Average review score:

Little book, powerful impact
This must be a heavenly-inspired book. It's written in such a down-to-earth style for the average ordinary human. Howell tells us the stories of a man who was born 2000 years ago and makes us fall in love with this crazy radical called Jesus. He shows examples from those "saintly" lives like St. Francis and Mother Theresa and Augustine and Martin Luther as well as many, many others who believe 100% that Jesus is the Son of God and how it has transformed their lives. They believe Christ lives within them... and thus their hands do Jesus' work-which is that of loving and taking care of all those around us.

In the self-absorbed century we just left, we have very much gotten away from helping our fellow man, haven't we? Howell suggests that perhaps we are just all too full of "stuff and things and material possessions". We need to get involved....to develop hearts that are impassioned for mankind.

If you belong to one of those "tight Christian social clubs" where everyone in your church is homogeneous and you emphasize in reach more than out reach, this book is a much-needed wake-up call for you. Read and absorb... We are all mortals who will face that judgment day. How empty-handed are you?

"We are put on earth a little space, that we may learn to bear the beams of love"-a thought-provoking quote by Wm Blake. What a perfect read to begin the year 2000.

Zoo Flakes ABC
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (October, 2002)
Author: Will C. Howell
Average review score:

What a clever book, and not just for kids!
In this enchanting book, the author has created "zoo flakes," or paper snowflakes cut into animal kaleidoscope shapes, for each letter of the alphabet. What time and patience this process must have taken! These are not crude cutouts of rough animal shapes, but highly detailed silhouettes of unicorns, foxes (foxen?), and more. I encourage you to click on the book cover picture above so you can enlarge it and get a glimpse of the animal shapes shown on the cover. Great as an alphabet book for kids or a fun book for adults to look through -- it would be a unique conversation piece on a coffee table. It also includes directions at the end for making zoo flakes.

The Pearls of Lutra (Redwall, Book 9)
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group Juv (January, 1997)
Authors: Brian Jacques, Allan Curless, and Troy Howell
Average review score:

It was not great but it was ok.
Out of all the Redwall series this was not the greatest. In my personal opinion the characters were not vivid enough. I could not get a clear mental picture of the character or their personalities. because, you see, in all the other books it felt like I had a bond with the characters, it was like I was right there with them being part of the story. But, in this book it just didn't happen. I personally would not recamend this book to any one just starting the Redwall series. In order to really get the jist of this book and know what is going on you would have to start from the begining and read the books in chronological order which is: Mossflower, Outcast of Redwall, Marial of Redwall, Martin the Warrior, The Bellmaker, Salamandastron, Redwall, Mattimeo, then finaly Pearls of Lutra, but then after that also comes the newest edition the Redwall series The Long Patrol. Well other than that I would reccamend this book to any die-hard Redwall fan. REEDWAAAAALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!Eulaliaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!! Holt Lutraaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good but not GREAT
"Tansy Pansy toggle-doo BOO! " great lines like this are great battle sequences are what the REDWALL books so good. They are so vivid and MR. Jacques is one of the BEST AUTHORS EVER! Every child should read these excellant REDWALL books they have everything a work of literature needs. All those other "classics" that are boring are nothin compared to this Series!

Ok now im done about the series on to the book......This book is about a young maiden named Tansy and her quest for ........non other then.........The Pearls Of Lutra! Yes believe it thats right! While at the same time Martin the second(yes the second not the first one, although they have the same personalities).Clecky the hare, Grath the otter and 2 more (i dont remember who who) go to the island Ublaz...This is a decent book but I think that the lack of battle really takes away something that could have been AWESOME! (perhaps the last 75 pages would have been good!). Aside from that this is a very good book and should not be missed by any Redwall fan!

This was an awesome book!!
Ublaz Mad Eyes, Emporer of Sampetra, wants the Tears of All Oceans for his own. So he has Holt Lutra (a colony of otters) murdered for 6 rose-colored pearls, called the Tears of All Oceans. But their biggest mistake was leaving the daughter of Lutra alive. Now Grath, only survivor of Holt Lutra,is sworn to seek vengeance on the murdurers of her kin. At Redwall Abbey, a young hedgehog maid and her friends are searching for the Tears which were hidden in Redwall by the late Fermald the Ancient. But the only way of finding the pearls is by solving difficult riddles written by Fermald. As they search, Ublaz sent out a ship to recover the Tears of All Oceans from Redwall.

I suggest that you read this book because it is exciting and mysterious.

The Big Cats and Their Fossil Relatives
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (15 June, 2000)
Authors: Mauricio Anton, Alan Turner, and F. Clark Howell
Average review score:

Good reference work
The Big Cats by Alan Turner is a very thorough discussion of the cat family, past and present. It also sports illustrator Mauricio Anton's splendid sketches and paintings of various members of the family. Those of extinct cats bring them to life in a way that the usual drawings of the skull and skeletal remains cannot. There is a thorough discussion of taxonomy in general and of classification of cats in particular. Unfortunately while the drawings are wonderful and the information dense, the book is not light reading. It might be useful to the professional paleontologist or zooarchaeologist looking for a good overview of cat remains or possibly appeal to the dedicated cat lover, but I can't imagine settling in by the fire on a quiet evening with the book. Its most appropriate place might be in a school library for reference use by students doing classroom projects on cats, paleontology, biology, ecology, etc.

A Most Excellent Read
I have long been interested about large cat (especially jaguars), and have often wondered about their evolution and early relatives. However, I had searched through every library in my county with no success. When I found this book, it was like a godsend. With superb illustrations and an excess of information, this has potential to be the definitive resource on prehistoric cats. Every big cat enthusiast should buy this book. This has become one of my second bibles.

At last! First class paleo-mammal illustrations!

In
the current dino-mania, fossil mammals are overshadowed. Too bad;
there are many curious and wonderful creatures in the mammalian
lineage. Yet, few well-illustrated popular books on the subject
exist. Bjorn Kurten's _Before the Indians_ had blurry charcoal
drawings. The late George Gaylord Simpson was an authority on
prehistoric South American mammals, but little more than a doodler
with a brush. And Colin Tudge's wonderful _The Time Before History_
had no pictures at all.

So this book is most welcome. Mauricio
Anton is a gifted artist. Cats and catlike creatures such as
nimravids, homotheriums, saber-tooths, dirk-tooths, all seem to live
again in these color and b/w pictures. The only beastie which is
unconvincingly rendered is the poorly-known _Thylacoleo_, the
marsupial lion.

Through the reproductions and discussions of these
and other animals, one gets a lesson in how different animals adopt
similar body plans, based on their ecological niche. Large top
predators are robust, while middle niche hunters are more
gracile. Thus, we are told, _Thylacoleo_, the largest nimravids, and
the largest saber-tooths resemble lions, while smaller predators
resemble cheetahs and leopards. All in all, a must for big cat- and
paleontology- lovers, the latter who may be getting tired of
dinosaurs!

Heidi
Published in Library Binding by Julian Messner (January, 1983)
Authors: Johanna Spyri and Troy Howell
Average review score:

Never underestimate the power of curious innocense
Heidi is ranked up there with, "Where the Red Fern Grows" with it's genuine love and care of the hearts of children and adults. I read this book to my children when they were in 1st and K...several times I had to stop to choke back the tears.. or laugh in exhuberance. It's a heart-warming tale of a little girl who didn't understand the "status quo" and sought to make sense of not only her own world, but those around her. Her innocense, genuine love and acceptance is so moving and so inspiring.

Heidi .... it's just great
Heidi is very exciting. She is very outgoing and adventurous. She gets sent to the Alm Mts. with her grumpy old grandfather. She shows him how to be nice and friendly. She meets a boy named Peter and they become good friends. He then shows her his family. Heidi meets his grandmother and falls in love with her and everything that she does. She then gets sent to a weird house. She soon came home.
This book is recommended for all ages to be read to or read by you!
Why am I telling you this go read it for your self!!!

Read it as a child and as an adult!
A while back when I was in my 30's (never mind how long ago that was!) I was sick with the flu, and I found a copy of HEIDI, so I crawled into a nice warm bed and re-read the book -- as an adult.

What insight into human nature! And as an adult I appreciated the dry, understated humor. I also appreciated the spiritual insights -- that God will give us what we desire, but sometims uses circumstances we don't like to teach us truths that we couldn't learn otherwise.

When I was a girl I was often turned off by what was called "good reading," but for some reason, I enjoyed Heidi and it never seemed sappy or corny.

Very much worth reading!

Little Men
Published in Hardcover by Longmeadow Press (June, 1991)
Authors: Louisa May Alcott and Troy Howell
Average review score:

You'll laugh and cry
It is truly a shame that the highest number of stars you can rate a book is five, because I would give this book a million stars if I could. It is truly one of the two best books I have ever read. (The other off course is Little Women).

Little men is a book that can make you both laugh and cry. The morals inside are more useful than any of the ten commandments. Louisa May Alcott has definetly done it again.

Without giving away everything, these are some of the reasons why you will enjoy the book:

1) You see Jo grow up. She is no longer the wild child who's impetuous and androgynous character often lead her to trouble. She inherits maternal qualities that you never expected Jo to have.

2) You will get more insight on the professor. Although I truly wanted Teddy and Jo to get together, this book made me think otherwise. Professor Bhaer, with Jo's help, makes a delightful father to the boys. He is the one you will get most of the life morals from.

3) The boys in Plumfield are definetly the key figures in the book. They create both the mischievious and melancholy stories. As I said, 'you'll laugh and cry'. Reading about these boys will make everyone reflect on their own lives.

4) Teddy grows up too. If you enjoyed the young scandulous Teddy, you'll enjoy the new one even more. In little men, Teddy (like Jo) has grown into a real mature father.

There are plenty more exciting things in the book. It is truly a classic masterpiece recommended to anyone who needs a lift in their spirit.

"Alcott, you are great"
Little Men is the funniest of all the three books. I like this book, but not as much as the Jo's Boys or Little Women. Little Men begins with 'Nat as the 1st ch. If you have seen the movie and think it is great, wait till you read the book. The novel is much more sophisticated and very touching. The movie basically concentrates on Nat and Dan, but the novel is about every single boy and girl. If you've seen the movie and didnt like it, guess what, try the novel! My fav't characters are everybody. Old Chirper(Nat), Dan, Demi, Daisy, Tommy, Franz, Commodore(Emil), Nan, Princess(Bess), little Ted, Rob, Jack..too many people. If you like the story of boys and girls, this is one of the books to read. If this is the Alcott's 1st book you've read, TRY ALL! ALCOTT IS THE BEST! My fav't part is the LITTLE COOKSTOVE(iron). Its so neat, and how Daisy, Nat, Demi, Dan, Emil, Tommy, and dont forget our Teddy, and Rob, standing up for each others.

WISH THEY WERE REAL!!!!!!!!!!
This is the continuation of Little Women, and Jo's Boys will be the cont. of this book. Little Men is a book about the boys and girls of all ages, and if you thought little women was much about women, READ THIS BOOK. The boys are all different ages. There is musical Nat, bookworm Demi, troublesome Tommy, fireband Dan(my fav't character), resonsible Franz, commodore Emil, Little Ted, Rob...and dont forget girls, Lovely Daisy, ms.giddy gaddy Nan, and pretty Bess....and so many other characters. They just will not be friends, but a great big FAMILY. They will be happy, sad, confused, angry...at each other, but will not be a problem for Mr.&Mrs. Bhaer(Jo), Mr.&Mrs. Brooke(Meg), and Mr.and Mrs. Laurence(laurie&Amy). These young men and women will be so different, yet so together and close!

The Secret Garden
I am EAD a fifth grade student at Wadron Mercy Academy.

She has moved here because Mary made a nasty wish that her parents and maids would die, and it came true! Now, Mary is lonly and unwanted by everyone. Mary's uncle is a widower who has one son named Colin.
Soon, Mary becomes used to this place and explores all of the gardens. She has an Irish friend named Deacon. Deacon and Mary explore all of the gardens. Does Mary, Deacon, and Colin find the magic garden that their aunt had locked up? Find out what happens to Mary, Deacon, a krippled boy Colin, Mary's mysterious uncle, and the magic garden. ... I think this book was a real page turner. I could not put this exciting book down. I highly recommend this book. It is a classic of all times! I rate this book #1 of all the books I have read. I also recommend the movie.

The Secret Garden (book review)

Soon Kim
June 18, 2002

Do you believe in magic? If you read The Secret Garden you will experience the amazing magic, I am sure.
Mistress Mary Lennox was born in India. Her parents paid no attention to her. Mary is not loved by all, she is spoiled, gloomy, sullen, and selfish in India. Suddenly, her parents die and she goes to live with her uncle on the Yorkshire moors of England. But also her uncle is an apathetic person.
When she arrived in Yorkshire she found another person who looked like herself. He is her selfish sickly cousin Colin. Mary and Colin discover his mother's garden. They take care of flowers and trees together, and they have a great deal of fun together. Mary learns to accept that there are other people in the world, and she helps Colin. The garden's magic makes the two children's characters normal and happy through good people and the beautiful secret garden.
I wish that you would read this book; if you need to love, if your mind has been devastated, if your life is dry and boring, if you lose interest in everything, then read The Secret Garden and your mind will sprout " The word is so beautiful." I still smell many kinds of sour smelling blushful roses in the secret garden. The sweet roses are coloring my mind still ......... I love them so.
